Concrete Flat Work

Flatwork covers the horizontal concrete around your property: driveways, sidewalks, patios, porches, and slabs for outbuildings. It is separate from structural foundation work but it lives on the same moving North Texas clay and it fails for the same reasons.

Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension. When expansive clay heaves in one spot and drops in another, the slab is put into bending, and unreinforced or thin concrete simply snaps. Adequate thickness, proper steel reinforcement, and correct subgrade preparation are what let flatwork survive here.

For residential driveways in this soil, thicker than the minimum a budget bidder will quote you, and reinforced with steel. A driveway that has to carry a truck or an RV needs more still. We specify thickness and reinforcement based on actual use rather than on hitting the lowest possible number.

If the concrete is structurally intact and has simply settled, pressure grouting to lift it back into plane is far cheaper than replacement. If the slab is shattered into multiple pieces, badly spalled, or was poured too thin to begin with, replacement is the honest answer. We tell you which situation you are in.

Generally about seven days for normal vehicle traffic, and foot traffic considerably sooner. Full design strength develops over roughly 28 days. Driving on it early is one of the most common ways homeowners damage otherwise good new concrete.

New concrete will be lighter than aged concrete, and it will not blend seamlessly at first. It weathers toward the surrounding color over time but rarely matches exactly. Where appearance matters a great deal, replacing a full section to a natural joint line looks better than patching.

We reinforce with steel rebar on structural flatwork. Wire mesh is cheaper and is frequently what low bids are built around, but it commonly ends up sitting at the bottom of the pour where it does very little. Properly placed rebar is what gives a slab the tensile capacity to survive clay movement.

Yes. Concrete will crack; control joints decide where. Cut at the right spacing and depth, they concentrate cracking into a straight, intentional line instead of letting it wander across the middle of your patio. Skipping or under-cutting them is a common shortcut and a visible one.
